Voor het project Haarlem en ik 775 jaar, wat georganiseerd wordt door artvark.nl heb ik gebruik gemaakt van mijn project ‘het ondergeschoven kind’ wat ik in het kader van de kunstlijn 2008 heb gemaakt onder de naam “tracing places”.
Spaarnestad Photo, Het Historisch Museum Haarlem en het ABC Architectuurcentrum zijn tegenwoordig gevestigd in het voormalig Sint Elisabeth’s of Groote Gasthuis. Dit gasthuis werd gesticht tussen 1350 en 1450 ten behoeve van de zorg voor zieken en armen. In de loop der eeuwen ontwikkelde het gasthuis zich tot een regulier ziekenhuis met onder andere een speciale kinderafdeling. Althans voor kinderen tot 12 jaar. Tieners verdwenen naar de mannen-of vrouwenafdeling. Dit zorgde vaak voor veel gevoelens van eenzaamheid.
Het St. Elisabeth’s Gasthuis in Haarlem was een van de eerste ziekenhuizen in Nederland die het probleem van een verloren groep jongeren tussen de volwassenen onderkende en zich sterk ging maken voor een eigen ‘teenerafdeling’. Bij de verhuizing in 1971 naar Schalkwijk is deze ‘Teenerafdeling” dan ook ontstaan. Vanuit heel Nederland is er belangstelling geweest naar het idee van deze opzet.
Ik heb mij laten inspireren door deze problematiek en de architectuur van het Elisabeth’s Gasthuis tussen 1870 en 1971. Uitgangspunt vormde de sfeer, het licht en de suggestie. Daarnaast heb ik mij laten leiden door teksten uit ‘De kleine demonstratie”. In dat boekje zijn ervaringen van tieners in het ziekenhuis aan het Groot Heiligland beschreven.
